TODAY'S
NEWS & VIEWS
"Today's
News & Views"
is an exciting daily feature, a welcome addition to the wealth of material found
on the National Right to Life's web page. "Today's
News & Views" is written in a style that appeals not only to
committed pro-lifers but to anyone with an open mind on the greatest social
justice issue of our day: abortion. "Today's News
& Views" will cover the waterfront. One day, the web surfer
will find a commentary on a recent prime-time television program, the next day a
book review, the day after that notice of a new pro-life video, the day after
that added details that go beyond that found in stories written for the National
Right to Life News--"the right to life newspaper of record." The goal is
to make the contents of "Today's News & Views"
so interesting that visitors will bookmark the page [www.nrlc.org]
and make visits a regular part of their day.

The Potentially Decisive Difference You Can
Make -- Part One of
Two
Editor's note. Please send me your thoughts at
daveandrusko@hotmail.com.
Part Two today is an exceptionally
inspirational reminder that calls to your attention all that you
can still do as an individual and as a member of a RTL chapter
to help at this particularly key juncture. Please take the time
to read "Important Last-Minute Reminder: It All Begins With You"
and to pass it along to family, friends, and colleagues.
I've mentioned several times the crucial
importance of keeping our noses to the grindstone and to
ignoring the cavalcade of "advice" from a "mainstream media"
(almost entirely in the camp of pro-abortion Sen. Barack Obama)
to just get out of the way of his coronation. Let me offer you
some thoughts why your efforts can make a pivotal, even
potentially decisive difference.
* Never be taken in, let alone mesmerized, by
public opinion polls. I don't mean by that the cliche that polls
are a mere "snapshots" of something that is far more dynamic.
There are three reasons why you should give less credence to
them than ever.
1. As has
been pointed out by Jay Cost, "In 1996, 30% of respondents
claimed to make up their minds a day to a month before the
election. In 2000, that number was also 30%. In 2004, 21% of the
public made that claim." That's a lot of people still up for
grabs. Compounding that unpredictability is that no election in
memory has been this volatile.
2. Polls are
"weighted" so that they account for what the pollster assumes is
the percentage of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. If
that is not correct, or not the particular mix of people who
vote November 4, the tabulations are off. Also some pollster
hone in on "registered voters" while others zero in on "likely
voters."
3. As
difficult as it is to believe, there are many people who are
still vaguely uncertain about Sen. Obama. They have heard that
he is a conciliator, the kind of man who isn't your average down
the line pro-abortionist. That's true. He is far worse! When it
comes to planting the seed of truth, think of the "mainstream
media" as rock-hard soil. They are doing everything to keep the
American public from knowing that Obama is relentlessly
pro-abortion and that he has publicly assured pro-abortion
groups that they can count on him to advance their broadest
anti-life agenda.
** Sen. Obama finished his party's primary
running on fumes. Pro-life Sen. John McCain finished the
Republican presidential primary by easily defeating his foes.
This does not prove the same dynamic will hold true over the
next 26 days, but it does suggest Sen. McCain has enormous
staying power.
*** Lastly, there is the Sarah Palin factor.
It is so true as to be trite but that doesn't make it any the
less significant: The pro-life governor of Alaska has energized
people in a way I have not seen since I joined the cause in the
1970s. Ohio and Pennsylvania are important to the McCain-Palin
ticket. Gov. Palin's blue-collar, down-home appeal "fits" both
states like a glove. Tonight this self-described "hockey mom"
drops the puck for the home opener of the Philadelphia Flyers
professional hockey team.
All this is said for one purpose: no matter
what you are told, this election will not be decided until the
first Tuesday in November. Please take the opportunity to read
Part Two, "Important Last-Minute Reminder: It All Begins With
You" and to pass it along to family, friends, and colleagues.
